Trust and security
Your unpublished work should remain under your control. Here is exactly what Lokee stores, syncs, and sends to AI providers — and what it doesn't.
Local-first data model
Lokee's desktop app stores your vault as open, human-readable JSON files on your own machine, backed by a local SQLite cache for fast search. You can read and recover your vault without the app.
What stays local
Everything in a local (non-synced) vault — manuscripts, entities, relationships, timelines, boards, and notes — stays on your device unless you explicitly enable Sync for that vault.
What syncs when Sync is enabled
Enabling Sync on a vault stores that vault's content in our cloud database so it can be accessed from the browser and the Android app, and kept in sync across devices. Vaults you never sync are never uploaded.
When AI providers receive content
Content is sent to an AI provider only when you explicitly run extraction, correction, or a similar AI-assisted action, and only the text you selected or the chapter you ran it on — not your whole vault.
Review-before-write rule
AI-proposed entities, relationships, attributes, and events are never written into your vault automatically. Every suggestion is shown for review; you accept, reject, or edit before anything becomes part of your world model.
Account and cloud boundaries
The local desktop app works fully without an account. An account is required only for browser access, cloud sync, or a paid plan.
Export and cancellation behavior
You can export your manuscripts, notes, and vault data to Word, PDF, or Markdown at any time. Cancelling Sync or Pro ends cross-device sync and the monthly AI credits at the end of the period you’ve paid for — it deletes nothing: not your local vaults or files, and not your cloud vaults.
Installer status
Windows builds are code-signed (Azure Trusted Signing) and macOS builds are code-signed and notarized by Apple — both install with no security warning beyond an occasional brief SmartScreen prompt on Windows while its reputation builds. See the download page for details and current status.
How Lokee is funded
Lokee is free, and paid for by Sync and Pro subscriptions and by ads. Ads appear only to visitors who are not signed in, on public pages of this website and in the public demo. There are no ads in the desktop app or the Android app, and none once you are signed in. Ads are never chosen from what you write, and nothing you write is sold to or shared with advertisers.
