Vault Setup & Settings

The Setup page, linked from your vault's sidebar, is where you configure how a vault looks and behaves.

• Entity types and relationship types — see Entities & Relationships below.
• Graph features — turn per-group clustering on or off.
• Calendar systems — define custom calendars for in-story dates.
• Vault language — sets the language used for content inside the vault.
• Restore Points retention (local vaults only) — how many backup snapshots to keep.
• Local Model (desktop only, still in testing) — configure an on-device or Ollama-hosted AI model for Import and Writer extraction. This does not apply to Capture — see Capture below.

  Setting up Ollama:

  1. Install Ollama on your computer and make sure it's running, with at least one model already downloaded — Lokee connects to Ollama, it doesn't download models for you.
  2. In Local Model settings, switch the mode to “Ollama.”
  3. Confirm the host — it defaults to http://localhost:11434— and click “Test connection.”
  4. Once it shows as connected, pick a model from the dropdown that appears; your choice saves automatically.
  5. That model is now available as a “Local Model” option when extracting entities from Import or Writer.

  This feature is still being tested — extraction quality depends heavily on the model you choose, and results may be weaker than the hosted AI pipeline, especially with smaller models.

• Sync (Sync plan or higher) — turn on cloud sync for a local vault.

Entities & Relationships

Entities are the characters, places, objects, and events in your story bible. Relationships connect them to each other.

Adding an entity

There are several ways to create a new entity:

• Right-click empty space on the graph and choose “Add entity.”
• Click “Create entity” from your vault's entity list.
• Capture a voice or text note — proposed entities from the AI pass appear for your review before anything is actually created.
• In the Writer, select text or type @to create an entity from what you're writing.
• On a Board, turn a sticky note into a new entity, or link it to one you already have.

Adding a relationship

There are several ways to connect two entities:

• On the 2D graph, drag from one node to another (2D only).
• On the 3D graph, right-click a node and choose “Start relationship,” then click the target node.
• From a node's edit panel on the graph, search for the other entity and pick a relationship type.
• From an entity's own page, use the Relationships panel — it also supports creating a companion Event entity for the relationship.

Entity and relationship types

• Entity types get a name, color, shape, and custom fields, and can be hidden from the graph by default.
• Relationship types get a color, a line style, and a “power of connection” strength, plus an optional “Cluster relationship” flag that pulls connected entities together in the graph layout. All of this is also editable directly from the graph's own Relations panel, not just Setup.

The Graph (2D & 3D)

The graph is a visual map of every entity and relationship in your vault, viewable in both 2D and an optional 3D mode.

Finding your way around

• A search box, entity-type filter chips, and a relationship legend/filter panel let you show or hide what you don't need.
• Focus mode: click a node to focus on it, choose how many hops out to show (1-3), and turn on “Collapse” to remove out-of-depth nodes entirely instead of just dimming them.

Layout & physics

• Physics on/off — freeze the live layout if it's moving too much or feels slow.
• Respawn re-tidies unlocked nodes; Reset clears every locked position and starts over.
• The Spread/Squeeze slider loosens or tightens the whole layout.
• Drag a node to lock it in place, or right-click it and choose Lock/Unlock.

Labels & lines

• Node and relationship labels can each be set to always show, only show on hover, or stay hidden — independently of each other.
• Arrows can be turned off if you'd rather read direction from context.
• Relationship types can use different line styles (solid, dashed, dotted) as well as color, so you're not relying on color alone to tell them apart.

Clustering

Any relationship type flagged as a “Cluster relationship” pulls its connected entities together. Each detected group of connected entities gets its own toggle, so you can turn one group's pull on or off without affecting any other group.

3D-only controls

• Fly freely through the graph with WASD and the arrow keys — W and S move you forward and back, which is how you “zoom” in 3D. Drag to look around.
• Lock the camera (or press “L”) if typing elsewhere on the page is nudging your view around.
• The Center button re-frames the camera on your graph's actual content.

Board & Mindmap

Boards are a freeform canvas for sticky notes, photos, and loose ideas — separate from the structured entity graph, for when you want to think spatially instead.

• Create or import a board, and add sticky notes, frames, labels, or photos to it.
• Link a note to an existing entity, or turn its text into a brand-new one — both are optional, nothing links automatically.
• Boards autosave as you work.

Writer

The Writer is where you draft your manuscript, chapter by chapter, alongside the rest of your story bible.

• Start a manuscript from scratch, or import an existing .docx file.
• Organize chapters in a tree — add, rename, and reorder them.
• Select text to link it to an entity, or create a new entity right from the selection.
• Extract entities from a selection, a chapter, or the whole book — results always go through a review step before anything is added to your vault.
• Which AI model handles extraction is set on the Import page, not in the Writer itself — check there if extraction behaves differently than you expect.

Capture

Capture is the fastest way to get a thought into your vault — the microphone button on every vault page opens it for a quick recording or note.

• Record your voice or type text; you'll see the credit cost before transcription or extraction runs.
• Review what the AI proposes — entities, relationships, and sticky notes — and choose what to keep before anything is created.
• Capture always uses Lokee's built-in transcription and extraction models. If you've set up a Local Model in Setup, note that it applies to Import and Writer extraction only — not Capture.

Family Tree

The Family Tree is an automatically generated view of every family relationship already in your vault — parents, children, siblings, spouses, and partners.

• There's no “add a family member” button on this page — add or edit family relationships from the side panel by searching for an existing entity and picking a relationship type.
• Mark how certain a relationship is: Confirmed, Alleged, Unknown, or Disputed.
• Lineage that doesn't make structural sense (like an entity being its own ancestor) is flagged with a warning.

Timeline

The Timeline lays out every dated event in your vault in chronological order, and supports multiple parallel or alternate timelines.

• Entries come from date, story_date, or event_dateattributes you've set on entities elsewhere — there's no “add entry” button on this page itself.
• Filter by search, entity type, tag, or date range.
• Branch a new timeline from a specific event to explore an alternate version of events, and mark whichever one is canonical.

Document Import

Import lets you pull entities out of an existing document — a chapter draft, a set of notes, anything with your story already in it.

• Upload a document and let AI extract entities and relationships from it — like Capture, everything goes through a review step before it's added.
• This is about extracting structured entities from prose, not backing up or duplicating your whole vault — for that, see Vault Backup & Restore below.

Vault Backup & Restore

Separate from Import, this is about protecting the vault itself.

• Export your vault to a zip file (desktop only) from the sidebar.
• Import a zip to create a brand-new cloud vault from it — this doesn't restore an existing vault in place, it creates a new one.
• Restore Points are a separate, in-vault feature — a running history of snapshots you can roll back to without ever leaving the vault.

Account & Subscription

Sign in with Google or an email and password to sync vaults to the cloud and unlock paid features. On desktop, you never need to sign in to use a local vault.
